Cautionary Notices

Administrative:

  1. Unless otherwise specifically documented, the professional engineer's professional liability is limited to the scope of work as indicated on the sealed drawings, specifications and reports which would pertain to work typically required to be engineered and professionally sealed by the local authority having jurisdiction. Portions of work indicated but not typically requiring engineering and professional seal by the local authority having jurisdiction is considered outside the professional engineers scope of work and is the responsibility of others.
  2. Where the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) charges permit fees for a review and inspection process, and the AHJ mandates the responsible professional engineer (P.Eng.) to provide a professionally sealed building design summary form (BDS or AHJ checklist), the P.Eng. does not take responsibility for the correct answering of mandated questions which are ambiguous or not involving the work being completed by the building trades working under that particular P.Eng's supervision. In all cases, the P.Eng. retains the sole right to interpret the AHJ questions as well as the answers provided. If further clarification is required, the AHJ is encouraged to retain competent degreed professionals conversant and specifically knowledgable in the discipline being reviewed in accordance with NFPA standards to interact as necessary with the design P.Eng.
  3. In cases of ambiguous design issues, and no proper clarification is obtainable from the AHJ, then it is assumed the P.Eng. will utilize historically approved design methods which will be liberally accepted by the AHJ with the benefit in the case of judgment going to the permit payer.
  4. For interpretations of items, specific notes, and/or general notes, the interpretation of the professional engineer shall be accepted and implemented for use. For record purposes, review all items, specific notes and/or general notes and notify the professional engineer of any concerns or discrepancies.

The respective contractor is responsible for completing all items noted by the authority having jurisdiction - without additional cost.
  4. Where equipment provided in contract or by others requires building system connections or interconnections, provide a complete compliant connection in accordance with the approved plans and specifications as well as all manufacturer's recommendations and instructions. Adhere to all manufacturer's cautionary warnings.

Mechanical:

  1. Provide owners with all manufacturers information accompanying mechanical equipment.
  2. Confirm all structural related construction issues such as mechanical ventilation openings, holes in structural members or equipment bases with the project structural engineer prior to proceeding.

Electrical:

  1. Provide owners with all manufacturers information accompanying electrical equipment.
  2. Confirm all structural related construction issues such as drilling holes in structural members, installing street lighting bases and equipment bases with the project structural engineer prior to proceeding.
  3. Drawings:
    1. Carefully examine all drawings and specifications relating to the work to be certain that the work under this contract can be satisfactorily carried out and prior to submission of tender, examine the work of the other trades and report at once to the Engineer, any defect, discrepancy, omission or interference affecting the work of section or the warranty of same.

The location of the outlets, equipment, etc. as given on the drawings are approximately correct but it shall be understood that they are subject to such modifications as may be found necessary or desirable at the time of installation to meet any structural, mechanical or architectural conditions. Such changes shall be made by the Electrical Contractor, as directed by the Engineer without additional charge.
  4. For all Ontario projects: the successful Electrical Contractor shall submit to the Electric Safety Authority all drawings and specifications required to be submitted by the Electrical Engineer for plans examination purposes.
